My experience was similar to Kevbo's. I think the key is if your foreign license is still valid when you apply for a BR license. If it's expired, you have to do the driving school b.s. At least that's the way it is here in SC. If your license is still valid, you merely get it officially translated, take it DETRAN, they stamp the translation, and tell you to drive with that document for the next six months (I have yet to determine the "why" behind that time period). Then six months later, you go back to DETRAN, and jump through the hoops Kevbo just posted. Then a week later (it's always "mais tarde" in Brasil, right?), you go back and pick up your actual license. @kevbo: If you Brits are better drivers, then WHY are you always driving down the WRONG side of the road?!? ![]() |

I might bark, but I don't bite.
(trolls, sock puppets, Brasil-bashers, and "Joined:Today" persons too lazy to use the Search function excluded; cry babies too) |

I'm in Manaus, AM.
I had the SINCRE doc with RNE on it. That SINCRE I got 2 weeks after moving in.
But I waited the 5 and a half month to get the lisence, this way you have half year more on your DL, before the renewal process.

I had the US lisence transfered and the same process you did (could have done it with my Finnish one as well, but it is still all the same process).
The rules are in state law, the Detran officer is not determining what you need or not depending to whom you talk to.
All together R$125.
In AM you need to take that additional DD class (no cost). But you can take it as a language learning class, no test. This came into the state law 4 years ago, when they realized how bad people drive here

SINCRE = SISTEMA NACIONAL DE CADASTRO E REGISTRO DE ESTRANGEIROS Usually you get registered at SINCRE once your permanent visa application in Brazil has been aprooved and published and you went to the PF to the REGISTRO DE ESTRANGEIRO and apply for the CIE. Just filing for the permanent visa or arriving with the visa is not enought, you have to get registered first, bevore your data will be entered into the SINCRE. ![]() |

well, it didn't work like that for me. It went like this for me:
1st trip to BH - Your medical exam is not in the file (of course not sh*thead - it's all online!) 2nd trip to BH - "The doctor didn't sign the medical exam" 3rd trip to BH - "Okay okay.. go down and pay the fee and we'll do it for you." - Paid the fee. - Wife calls back a week later and they said my file had been incinerated. This was really the worst experience I've had in Brazil. I ended up just doing the driving school and shelling out more than 1k reais. I passed on the first attempt, not surprisingly. I seriously wish someone would go to that little office and taser those grumpy old men. |

I'm concerned now.
After the Detran system crash last week I have not gotten back the results for the theory test. Hope I don't have to redo it. |
