This has always baffled me too, and it's going to change in time. I think that as the gap between the social classes change, many of the better-off and middle-class Brazilians will stop being able to afford someone to clean their sh*t-bins for them, and the whole thing will become a lot more personal.

I did however read that the cellulose in the majority of toilet paper is actually designed to aid the biodegrading process in the fossa, assuming there is one. However, the arrival of the quilted four-ply toilet paper has caused issues, as it does take longer to dissolve. There is some argument about if cellulose does help or hinder the process, but generally paper made from recycled sources is considered better than the softer brands.

I am building my own house and refuse to have bins anywhere in bathrooms/toilets, preferring to send Brazilian friends who can't manage the concept to do like the bears, and sh1t in the woods!
