I have got a cousin in the logistics industry. Send me your vitae and I will pass it to him. Things around here are all about who indicates you to the job.

I am thinking of just a couple hundred dollars at first, but not sure whether to do it here in the USA before I come next week or not.

thanks in advance

Supposedly you can exchange at the current rate (which is quite nice today!) at Banco do Brasil fairly easily (I've never done it).  The airport/mall exchange things can rip you off with fees and sh*tty rates.  My experience is it's just easiest to use an ATM here and not worry about bringing money.  You get the current exchange rate this way, and it's painless.  I wouldn't worry about bringing lots of cash if you still have accounts in the US you will be drawing on.

Just check the exchange. If they are willing to pay less than market price there, I've experienced that before, than you come here. The dollar is going up steadily these days, so you might want to do some research to see if it is worth betting on this trend.

I used to do the ATM thing and it is infitenly better than bringing money. Plus, you can use your card instead of getting one of our ripoffs . Plus again, opening a bank account here is a pain in the soul, and it gets worse with the fees. The only thing about using the ATM is that the withdraw fee is rather high, like US$5 each time. So take out a larger amount to minimize the number of times you need to use the machine.

I wouldn´t recomend to exchange neither cash nor traveler checks in Brazil. Exchange rates are poor and it´s not easy to find an travel agency or money exchange, especially in BH.

I know of some shopping malls that have a currency exchange :

Belo Horizonte - BH Shopping

Rodovia BR 356 , 3.049, Loja - OP 83 - CEP: 30320900 - Belvedere
Atendimento: Segunda a Sexta das 10:00h às 20:00h e Sábado das 10:00h às 18:00h.

Belo Horizonte - Diamond Mall

Av. Olegario Maciel , 1600 , Loja 65 - Térreo - CEP: 30180111 - Lourdes
Atendimento: Segunda a Sexta das 10h as 20h. Sábado das 10h as 18h.

Contagem - Shopping Itaú Power

Av: General David Sarnoff , 5160, Loja 78 - CEP: 32210110 - Cidade Industrial
Atendimento: Segunda a sexta das 10h as 20h. Sábado das 10h as 18h.

But you get better exchange rates if you leave your money on your US account and withdraw cash with your credit card at ATM´s.
