Makes perfect sense. Why buy if you can rent in all senses?

Also, try not to bring lots of funds to Brazil. Cash makes you even more attractive short-term target then property.

Kurtz,
In my opinion stay in Niteroi area for a while(rent or buy) and keep on looking for some opportunities in Barra or Recreio..

Kurtz,
Sorry about my wrong opinion which I gave you in my earlier post.
I guess I can blame it on left over champaign we had from our last night during lunchSmile today. I overlooked that your budget is USD 250 not reals 250 K which is mine. This changes the scenario completely. You got now lots more choices than me. You can find some decent places (even in Jardim Oceano part of Barra- difficult but possible) in your list of choices...
Please keep us updated with your progress...

Look at Icararai in Niteroi.  Barra is a little too far from Sao Goncalo, so when the inlaws come to visit for the afternoon...they will need to stay the whole weekend for lack of transport!

I'd live in the Sao Francisco part of Niteroi if we had to live that side of the bridge - if you got lucky you could find a small house over there for R$500k - that generally means your own pool and parking space, and no condo bill.

Sao Francisco is a very attractive part of Rio and you don't get any tourists over there! as well as having one of the best views in the entire City its a real winner.

This house has been on the market for ages - I'm sure they would take a hit! http://www.zap.com.br/imoveis/oferta/Casa-Padrao-4-quartos-venda-NITEROI-SAO-FRANCISCO-/ID-1832896

 - always look at stuff 100/200k over your budget because I think hardly any thing goes for the asking price - that's how we got our place anyway.

Wait a minute - I saw other posts from today where Kurtz is ranting and raving about how Brazil sucks. What happened? Did you and the girlfriend finally meet and person?
