Also, how is BR-101 from Floripa going to Rio Grande do Sul?  Someone told me that its pretty bad traffic because of road construction.

BR-101 just after the toll booth in Palhoça is not only a mess, it's quite dangerous!  It improves just before you reach the turn-off for Praia do Sonho.  You'll hit pockets of construction here and there, but the worst section is what I just mentioned.  Around Imbituba, the road is sweet, and if the entire project will one day be like this stretch of asphalt, it will be worth the wait.  Regardless of detours or good stretches of asphalt, the summertime traffic will make the journey longer than normal.

Only recently I've been as far as Laguna, but sometime back went to Gravatal, and the section around Tubarão was quite a mess.  Maybe that's improved by now.  Once you hit the border of RS, you're driving on the finished product again.  The Gaúchos finished their stretch quite sometime ago.  Have not yet made it to Itaimbezinho, so will be interested in reading what you post about the trip.

I might bark, but I don't bite.

I have some family coming to visit and would like to take them to a good rodizio churrascaria.  There's a Fogo de Chao in Austin and they really like it.  Honestly, the churrascarias I've been to in Brazil haven't been as good, but I haven't gone to one that is in the same price range.  Anyone been to Ataliba or have a better recommendation?  Looking for something in the R$75 price range for rodizio.

And for anyone who is looking for a good sushi place, Wa Sushi across the street from Iguatemi Mall is great.  Its kaiten style (conveyor belt) buffet for R$45 female / 55 male.  You can also order hand rolls, yakisoba, and sashimi, which is included.

Ataliba is good, and one of the few churrascarias on the island.  There are more on the continent (but can't recommend any).  As for sushi, there seems to be one sushi joint on every corner these days!  I prefer a little hole-in-the-wall place called Roots Sushi, located in Barra da Lagoa, inside a small marina (Verde Mar, on Beco dos Coroas).  First street on left, after crossing the bridge over the canal.

Roots has 'festival nights' on Mon and Thurs (all you can eat, yet made to order).  Prices similar to what you described at the mall Austex.  Yet the place is really small (seats max 30 people inside), so you need to get there right about 19hs if you go on festival night, in winter.  People 'linger' at their table, so if you come around 21hs, you might be looking at an hour or more wait.

They also have a location in the town of Lagoa too, but I like this one in Barra better.  Yet summer is the best time to go there, because it's located right on the lagoa, you get a nice sunset, and their deck accommodates probably another 20-30 people.

EDIT: When pulling up a link for Roots Sushi, I noticed I forgot to mention their 3rd location, one now in Centro.  Haven't been.  I think it's more popular for lunch, rather than dinner.
