Make sure you actually need the declaration of civil status! In my case, the first cartorio would not accept it because it was not "from the country of origin" (because the consulate is in Brasilia) and was not translated into Portuguese (the document is in Portuguese). They asked instead for a declaration from every state in the US saying that I am not married there. We ultimately got married in a different cartorio, and I swore my declaration there. Going to Brasilia was ultimately an expensive and unnecessary time-consuming trip caused by the neverending sea of horse crap that is the corrupt, useless Brasilian bureaucratic process. |

My cartorio didn't require any document proving I was single, ask your local cartorio for exactly what you need

"They asked instead for a declaration from every state in the US saying that I am not married there." ... Wow... what about US territories lol... rediculous! My fiancee went to the Cartorio and asked. They do require it, and a declaration from the US embassy is fine. I will go the day I arrive and have them issue it in Portuguese to save on the translation hassle (as suggeted by the initiator of this thread... Samye&Jesse ...)
Oh and *Don Vito...
I looked at my visa last night.... I just got it in December so maybe something has changed but it is in fact for 10 years... issued in Houston with 90 day max per stay and 180 max per year. Im not planning on living in Brazil for a few years (just moved back to the US from Mex. in 2006 and finished 6 years of undergrad and Grad school) but Im sure I will be hitting up this site when it comes time. The process was fairly simple in Mexico, Im sure it cant be tooo different or difficult... knock on wood.

So wait... the US embassy issued the document in Portuguese and they didnt accept it because it had not been translated? Hmm... wow ok. Well that is what the cartorio is asking for so Im gonna take it. Fortunately the trip is only a short distance from the airport and I was able to get an appointment for the right time... Im just crossing my fingers for no delays!! |

I missed seeing this until now....... my gal lived in Canada for 15 months, and we dated for a year of that. When her visa had run out I wasn't ready to commit, so she went home and we put our relationship to the test. Six months later I was down there for us to make some decisions, and nine months after that I was back to make it legal. Prior to our wedding she met with an immigration consultant in Sampa who told her she had no chance of getting back into Canada as a visitor because she was now acclimated to the country and an immigration risk (?), it's a weird weird world we live in. So originally she comes here, studies english, loves it here and wants to stay, is in her 20's and perfectly healthy and qualified to be a skilled worker, but has to go home while her branquelo gets put through the wringer by his own government to be able to get her back. HA! |

Canada has too many skilled worker applicants in lots of industries. It's mostly a marketing scam to build immigration, but neglects to mention the barriers it surprisingly reveals after you arrive. It went that way for us and being able to practice medicine. Your best option is to apply for a permanent residency based on marriage and hope it doesn't take 19 months.
