Hello! I am a 36 year old American living in Sorocaba Brazil with my Japanese Girlfriend. I have been in Brazil for about 2 months. I have been learning Portuguese, but not fluent.. I understand more than I speak... I go to the Academia 3 to 4 times per week to keep sane. Would be nice to make some friends to compare experiences. I have a good support network from my girlfriends friends and family around me. I could not ask for more! But I am looking to get out in the Brazilian world on my own and quit being so dependent on her. Need bust out! Going through the normal culture shock.
Anyone in the area of Sorocaba or Sao Paulo? Hit me up! Tchau!

Hello,

Check out this place close to Capela do Alto which is about 45 mins from Sorocaba.

http://pousadainglesa.blogspot.com/

They have regular events with a good mix of 'gringoes' and locals.

Samara is an English teacher and could help you with your Portuguese.

Great place to chill out, listen to some live music and drink a few beers.

Nick.

the important thing is you have a support network. continue learning the language and the rest will flow. don't rush things. it will take a little while to get in the mix. but you'll be fine.

Hi,Larry - I have found this article in the site www.expat exchange.com/Brazil forum and perhaps you could contact this people for a better BR-socialization.
Good Luck! See below:

My family is moving from the U.S. to sorocaba, Brazil.
I'm American and my husband is Brazilian.
I would like to connect with other Americans there.
Is there an established American community there? It would be great to have that connection before the homesickness sets in!

That was my post! Thanks for referencing it, I'm hoping to make some connections before moving. We will be moving early next year. I have a very limited vocabulary in Portuguese but I understand quite a bit. I can usually get the gist of a conversation or statement from familiar words and context, although that can be dangerous at times. Anywho, I'm afraid I can't really help you "bust out" but maybe you can help me? I'm hoping to connect with Americans in Sorocaba for advice and friendship. I've visited Sorocaba several times so I have a fair idea of what to expect. It's the day to day and adjustment of calling Brazil home that I don't know about... My first hurdle is going to be the language, which seems to be your situation as well. P.S. You're talking Sorocaba, Sao Paulo, right?

It certainly can. But we've all been there and done that. You're not alone--and it will give you something to laugh at down the road (unless, of course, you get the wrong gist from the wrong person Smile

I'm coming over next week for three months!! Msg me. Maybe we could at least chat.

I'm from London (living in Bath), 32 years old next week (day before I fly!) and coming over to see my partner. Been to Sorocaba for two days before!...so am a little nervous to say the least.....

Hey Brandy,

I am a Canadian living in Brazil with my husband and daughter for the last year. We were transfered for my husbands work. We have been in Sorocaba the whole time and have still not connected with any other expats. Finding someone who speaks english here has been a challenge. How have you been finding the transition? Are you here for work or pleasure?

Hope to hear back from you soon,

Crystal
