So what is your craving?
Marmite? Mustard? Guinness? Cheddar? PG Tips? Roses Lime Cordial? The list is endless, and so is your list of failed attempts to find somewhere that sells it in Brazil! I found Coleman's English Mustard in the Mercado Municipal Curitiba, where you can also buy Lea & Perrins. Carrefour used to sell cans of Guinness, but they seem to have stopped, or ran out. Everything else that I have in my cupboard was brought by family or friends. I can't wait for the next visit! I even wrote to Heinz, trying to find out where I could buy their baked beans! Any contributions gratefully received! |

I am happy when I get liquor and coffee from the states, but aside from that I am happy with the food here.

Good mustard can be had at Festval in Agua Verde. Guinness, i see around but don't buy here- too pricey for the amounts I require.
Marmite and PG tips, I bring from home, never seen it here. Although I have to say I'm not as thrilled with Tips as everyone seemed to indicate I would be- there are some decent local black teas but you need to try several before you hit on a good one (Cha Tupi has an orange pekoe that's acceptable, if I recall.) Baked beans, I make, easy enough (not sure if the UK version of Heinz beans is as easy to make as the US version, assume they're different). Other than that, not much. I cook a lot and make what I am missing, and do OK. |

@ alastairkinghor: Since you're in CWB, 3casas knows where to find decent cheddar cheese. PM her for the store name (if she doesn't post it here).

it was some random place in the mercado municipal!! i could tell you where it's situated, if not the name, although it may involve meeting up with you as the mercado mcpl is undergoing a renovation that has everything all higgledy-piggledy, and the stores seem to be in a different place every time i go there.

Higgledy-piggledy? I'll have to remember that term when attempting to describe the renovation of BR101 south of Floripa! Do you teach that term to your students? ![]() |

Actually, the cheddar 3casas found there in CWB, at the Mercado Municipal (in spite of the higgledy-piggledy renovations), was the perfect condiment for some kick-ass chili I made for one of the Curitibanos gringo get-togethers. Certainly far better than using queijo colonial, much less queijo lanche (which I think actually falls into a non-cheese category, along with catupiry). ![]() @ DP: Next trip north, I'll bring ya back some sharp WHITE cheddar! I think you might change your opinion. ![]() |

Hmmm..
If you're referring to those "Kraft Singles" or worse yet "Cheesewizz"(spelling aside), those all find themselves in the same category as Catupiry. Another hard to fancy item. You have to dig deeper into the trenches of major cities, the expensive hard to find items or locally crafted from mom and pop shops, you can find good cheddar! (USA, Canada alike).. That's all well and done but not to be ironic, I still love quiejo coalho! Burned, please! Edited by Brazillifestyle - 14 August 2011 at 20:55 |
