Três, picked up some "Fuba Mimosa Grosso" yesterday.  Yet forgot the baking powder, dammit!  I looked at all you mentioned.  The polenta stuff did look good, but I could tell it won't work for cornbread.  The normal fuba is like flour, not "meal" (coarse grind), yet this grosso consistency just might do the trick.  If not, I think it would be great to dredge some shrimp or fish in, before frying (plain cornmeal is commonly used in the US south for frying seafood, rather than making a batter).  Whatever results, I have until November to get it right.  Fingers-crossed!  Grato!!!

I want to know where you find all of this stuff!  9 times out of 10 I can't even find fresh ginger (and that's trying 2 different major grocery stores).

I needed to find cream of tarter once to make some snickerdoodles... I swear I went to 10 different grocery stores.  They kept taking me to the tartar sauce (one woman actual took me to the toothpaste).  We finally found it in one of those baking supply stores (that I didn't know existed at the time and my husband is worthless at these things.  He just says, "Ginger? What's the translation?  oh, we don't have that in Brazil.")

So do you get these things at the actual grocery stores or is there some other secret?  My grocery store doesn't seem to have anything.

where do you live, ENW?  Ginger is everywhere!!
Some of this stuff is at the normal grocery, some in specialty stores.  I like to explore.

People, when you have these problems, email me.  I'd send it to you, if i can find it here.  And yes, when you find those baking supply stores, it's like hitting the mother lode.....  And my husband is totally the same.
actual dialog:
me: "hon, what's 'foice' mean?"
ballandchain: " i dunno.  probably not portuguese."
our kid: "you're full of crap!! it's a sickle! you just don't know the word in english!"

it's never worth asking!

You might try looking at a sacolão.  The larger super nearest me occasionally has ginger, but small pieces, in a shrink-wrap package, which are old and shriveled.  Yet the local sacolão has huge tubers, freshly dug, and for much less.

We ARE talking about R$3 to R$ 4 pieces of ginger aren't we?

Or are we talking about gold bullion.

Maybe the price shouldn't have been the comparison, but the size and quality.
At the super, a shriveled piece the size of one's thumb for the same price as a fresh tuber the size of your entire hand at the Sacolão.  Maybe you don't consume much ginger Sven, but it's a staple around here....
