I recently moved here from the US and have been eating with my wife's family for most of the meals. I've noticed that everything I eat is loaded with sodium. Has anyone else noticed this? Where the hell is the black pepper? I have salt and pepper containers at my house that are both filled up with salt.

black pepper you better bring from home!  even if you can find it here (pimento do reino) it tastes like it's been neutralized or something.

I posted this several years ago but I will repeat it.

A Brazilian's idea of subtle seasoning is to salt the crap out of everything.  My wife's mother is a particulary bad offender.

Brazilian food comes in one of two flavors, salgado ou doce, salty or sweet.

Wait until x-mas ... Bacalhau, yum yum ... and you thought you missed turkey at Thanksgiving ...

I agree.  The food is far too salty.   My wife and our housekeeper make very healthy food but ruin it by adding far too much salt.

yES BRING YOUR OWN PEPPER MILL, and bring the Costco whole peppers about a quarter pound for eight bucks.  Pimentao do rei costs an arm and a leg in Brazil.  I also like to brimg the Costo garlic, a couple of pound for six bucks. This too is very expensive in Brazil.

No problem here in Porto Alegre - I can get disposable pepper mills here for around R$10's and need a new one every month and a half or so.
Really good here for supermarkets - you can pretty much get any thing from Zafari I'm going to really miss it when I go back to Rio - but it is getting better all the time up there and I think in a few years it will be the same standard.

Yes, they do like their salt and they do like their sugar.  They substitute Tabasco for black pepper.  Bring your own pepper mills from the U.S.

I have no problema bying black pepper.

The fact that brazilians use too much salt is widely known.
