I think it's a little weird people here have such distaste for meeting up with their fellow countryman. I've just recently posted but have read this Forum since it's inception since 1999. Here in So. Florida, Brazilians hang with their own, Cubans hang with their own, Colombians, etc. Brazil is the only country I've lived where my fellow Americans and Brits seem standoffish and rude. Surely, not all, but most fit this profile. The Latin countries I've lived; Col, Pan, CR, and even Spain, my fellow countrymen always seem open to friendship. Most every major city in Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica has a thriving friendly Expat community. I've also noticed on this Forum, Expats enjoy online camaraderie but meeting up personally is taboo. And on other Expat Forums, people like the idea of meeting people from their home country. However, I am aware Brazil does harbor Fugitives and that’s really unfortunate and sad and I've met my share of shady people: Brazilians and Expats, in Brazil and USA.

The main problem with Rio is nobody trust anybody, and this is blamed on the lawlessness and disrespect of Expats by local Police. After 12 years living off and on in Rio, I've only been able to meet maybe six high class Cariocas. And what bothers me is after working all my adult life in the US building excellent credit and reputation and selling my company honorably, I now have to start all over in Rio proving myself to the locals that I am not some lowlife begger Fugitive. That said, I've never had the feeling of having to prove myself in Latin countries, like I do in Rio. That said, I continue to meet as many people as I can with my best foot forward and the rest is out of my hands.

My Mother always said .... " a stranger is a friend you don't know. "

I am a gringo and I've lived in Rio for the last few years. I agree that there is no thriving expat community. But, there aren't very many expats in Rio in general.

Maybe that's because this place is actually kind of a dive. I live in a really nice area and I have to say, I still feel like I'm living in a sh*tty part of the US in terms of the way people behave...

You have to 'prove yourself' in Rio because, and this is news because I've NEVER said this on this forum: cariocas do not actually LIKE foreigners.

They don't understand what an expat IS. They just see foreigners as gringos, and to them that means tourists.

You sound like you have difficulty making friends like the guy who complained a month ago... You can have the time of your life everyday!

No, I don't have difficulty making friends. I have friends in many countries around the world.

However, I've found the people of Rio to be ignorant and really have not enjoyed the culture.

I freely express this opinion. In fact, I never did until I realized they rudely expressed their ignorance at every turn.

This is why I'm leaving, to go be with my friends!

It's not like I don't want to though; there's just none that live where I live. The only gringo here is some retired Viking (Scandinavian guy). There have been those who come, but they usually only last a few months and then go back to wherever they came from.

And here I thought you meant an actual retired Viking

Well I can understand the ignorance and maybe feeling isolated! I think if you spend time off and on in Rio it might work out better. That way you're not stuck here all year round. Rio has more too it than the social scene and it works for some and not for others!

Take care!

I agree!

My big mistake has been living here, straight, for several years.

Cheers

It seems gringos in São Paulo feel the need to interact with gringos more than in Rio.

I am not quite sure about this. I have been here for 2 years and the first interaction with gringoes I had, happened a week ago on this forum.
(The only Gringo or Gringa I met and talk to was the owner of one language school, but it happened 19 months ago)

Where I go, there are usually no Gringoes at all,e.g. like local Samba baladas..., or beaches visited only by locals
SP is not Rio
