I get more tickets in 5 months in Sao Paulo than my entire life in US.

I have logged about 430k miles in the last 25 years driving at home with 3 tickets (1 parking and 2 speeding).

In S.P, I have received Zona Azul (couldn't see the darn sign - way up there and behind the tree), speeding (83km on 70k vinte tres - still don't believe I can go that fast in this type of traffic), and ticket of the day -running a RED!

I see local drivers violate traffic rules left and right, (with some very insane move) do they get that many tickets? Maybe being a foreigner attracts more tickets..sucker!

Help me beat the system please. What are the tricks?

LOL...I didn't know they even gave out traffic tickets in Brazil!!!
Maybe you are driving 'too carefully' and need to be more crazy like the locals...LOL
Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave with a well preserved body, but to skid in sideways at a high rate of speed, drink in one hand, totally worn out shouting, "Whoa, what a ride"!

This won't be of much comfort but all I can say is that it will get better.  I also collected a handful of tickets in my first months in Brazil.   After awhile you develop a sixth sense about the speed cameras and the cameras on the traffic lights.   Same thing with Zona Azul.   It's all about revenue.  When you get your Brazilian driver's license you have to worry about points but you can make those go away too with a little cash planted in the right places.

This is another "Brazilian thing" that I don't get. I am getting more tickets in a "loose", chaotic, and insane traffic system with people exercise their free will in driving as compared with a very systematic, defined, logical, and safety first system. Go figure!

Friend of my wife (Brazilian) never pays her tickets for like TEN years. She couldn't sell her car unless she clears all the tickets. She just let the car go since it worths less and the fine combined ! That was 5-8 years ago so I am not sure things have changed.

Steve, you bring up the point system. My brother-in-law told me this trick: Register the car to a person without a license (He registered my car with my Sogra). All the points deduction go to this person without a license. As long as I pay the fine, I will be ok. Another creative Brazilian way to "work around" the system and find the loop holes!

Or registre the car in a company name, you pay 10-20% on top of the normal ticket price, but nobody gets the points.

Pay R$200 to your wifes sister, that need a new pair of shoes, for taking the points.

Let a despechante clear the problem with Detran, I dont no the price, but know its possible.

I'm also worried about the traffic points accumulated from the driving tickets. I've had a violation from a rental car and my own car, and had to present my International license as well as pay the fines.

My question is - Do they track the points accumulated in the international license and carry these over to my Brazilian permit? I will appreciate if people can provide information on this. Thanks!

They track the points through your CPF, not your license.

That's too bad then. It would register to my CPF.
