This week’s entertainment guide for São Paulo features an Italian restaurant in Bela Vista, an exhibition at Itau Cultura, this week’s recommended film, and a roundup of some other upcoming events.

Speranza"This week’s restaurant recommendation is Speranza, located in Bela Vista. The restaurant is one of the most famous and oldest pizzerias in São Paulo, with the Italian descended family that own it in their third generation. Two classics on the menu, that are believed to be first sold in São Paulo at Speranza, include the Napolitana (tomato sauce, parmesan, garlic, oil, oregano, and basil) and the simple Margherita (tomato sauce, mozzarella, and basil). Speranza are also believed to be the first to sell the classic calzone pizza, that is a pizza filled with ingredients and folded. The restaurant offers around 30 choices of pizza toppings, and other recommendations include the pão de lingia (sausage bread) the frango passarinho and the delicious torta pastiera de grano, a typical Napolitan dessert. Open Monday – Friday: 6pm – 1:30am, Saturday open until 2am, Sunday until 1am. Rua Treze de Maio 1004, Bela Vista. Tel. 3288 8502 and 3288 3512. http://www.pizzaria.com.br (Note the site is still under construction, but you can register to be notified when it’s ready)

Primeira PessoaOpening this week at Itau Cultural is the exhibition Primeira Pessoa (First Person). The theme is of course people, whether in the form of biographies and autobiographies, portraits and self portraits. The exhibition is composed of a mixture of disciplines, that allow the viewer to look through the eyes of the artist, and to experiment with their impressions and memories. Eleven artists have work on show as part of the exhibition, some of which has been produced specifically (for example that from Daniel Acosta and Efrain Almeida). Free entry. The exhibition ends January 28th 2007. Open Tuesday – Friday: 10am – 9pm, and Saturday, Sunday and Holidays: 10am – 7pm. http://www.itaucultural.org.br (note the site is in Portuguese)

The PrestigeThis week’s film recommendation is The Prestige (O Grande Truque in Portuguese). The film is based on the novel by Christopher Priest, and directed by Christopher Nolan, with screenplay co-written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan. The story is set in turn-of-the-century London, and features two rival magicians, Robert Angier and Alfred Borden (played by Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale), who have had a lifelong battle against each other for the secrets to their illusions and tricks. The battle turns from a friendly competition to a bitter rivalry, jeopardising both their own lives and those around them. The film has received good reviews, and is recommended for fans of drama and action. Rated PG-13 in the USA, and 12A in the UK. IMDB’s page on The Prestige.
