Brazil: São Paulo Entertainment Guide

This week&rsquot;s entertainment guide for São Paulo features an Italian restaurant in Vila Madalena, a park in the north zone, a new exhibition at MASP, this week&rsquot;s recommended film release, and a roundup of some other upcoming events.

DivinaAs the name suggests the restaurant Divina Italia is a source for Italian food. The restaurant was opened in 1994 by the couple Norma and Fernando Franco. The restaurant itself is split into three areas, one of which is in the garden. Their intention is to serve traditional Italian recipes normally served by the Italian colonies that made it to Santa Catarina, so offerings are items such as salads and pasta (the pasta is freshly made in the restaurant). Examples dishes include bacalhau lasagna with broccoli, and sertaneja lasagna with dried meats and pumpkin sauce. Open Monday: 11:30am – 3pm and 7pm – 1am, Tuesday – Friday: 11:30am – 4pm and 7pm – 1am, Saturday: 11:30am – 2am, Sunday: 11:30am – 11pm. Valet parking available except Monday, R$5. Rua Mourato Coelho, 789. Vila Madalena. Tel. 3814-3344.

Cidade de TorontoThe park Cidade de Toronto (City of Toronto) located in the north of São Paulo is not surprisingly the fruit of a partnership with Toronto in Canada, and created in 1992. The park contains a lake with several bridges, where it used to be possible to fish until it was recently prohibited. The park also contains a play area for children. There is also a running track, and courts, as well as gym equipment there (for which curiously the signs are in English). There are also barbecue areas which are in good condition. Open Monday to Sunday, 6am – 6pm. Av. Cardeal Motta, 84. City Amrica. Tel. 3648 0579.

MASPMASP have a new exhibition, “Contrastes” (Contrasts), which opened on the 9th April. As the title suggests it contrasts work from 28 Brazilian artists, and foreign artists that chose to live in Brazil. All the works were completed between the 1970s and 1990s. This include works from artists such as Tomie Ohtake, Alex Flemming, and Daniel Senise. The exhibition ends on the 30th April. Two other exhibitions are currently on show: recent work by Cyble Varela, and an exhibition of the master Ernesto de Fiori. Open Tuesday – Sunday: 11am – 6pm (ticket office closes at 5pm). Av. Paulista , 1578. Also easily accessible from Metro station Trianon-Masp. http://www.masp.art.br

V for VendettaThe film recommendation this week is V for Vendetta (V de Vingana, in Portuguese). Based on the famous graphic novel by Allan Moore, V for Vendetta is set in a not so distant future, albeit in a totalitarian Britain. It tells the story of Evey (Natalie Portman) who gets involved accidentally in a terrorist attack, perpetrated by a masked and megalomaniac character, only known as “V” (Hugo Weaving). As Evey uncovers the truth about V&rsquot;s mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself – and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plot to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption. V for Vendetta has generally been well received, and is recommended for fans of action based films. Rated 16 in Brazil, R in the USA, and 15 in the UK.
