Brazil: Hidden Pousadas – Villa Inglesa, Salvador, Bahia

By Alison McGowan
May 13, 2014

What a wonderful way to start a trip to Bahia: the Villa Inglesa. This is a brand new 7 room pousada which doesn’t even have a sign outside the door yet, but it is definitely all there in terms of comfort and only moments away from beach, lighthouse, bars and all the local restaurants.

The creation of London Neil Manning, this is a pousada with a very special individual charm. The patios and small garden are dotted about with tables and sunshades and the free wi-fi is perfect for catching up on your blog or your emails whilst still leaving you feeling incredibly lazy.

Suites themselves are not huge but they have everything you want like excellent beds, bed linen, good lighting, wardrobes, Split” airconditioning and ceiling fans. In the bathroom amongst other things you’ll find an excellent power shower to cool you down.

Villa Inglesa came highly recommended by Sean, the owner of Pousada Estrela do Mar just round the corner but I wasn’t sure what it would be like as it was brand new and didn’t have any guest reviews. What I found totally exceeded expectations, a perfect place to base youself for a few action packed days in Salvador.

About the Location
Salvador is simultaneously hot, chilled and laid back. And nothing like the south of Brazil! Home to the largest influx of slaves in the country (nearly five million between the 16th and 19th centuries) its population remains predominantly black and local customs reflect and incorporate African traditions in religion, culture, dance and dress.

The city has grown tremendously over the last thirty years, and with a population that is now well over 3 million the usual problems have all arisen. For many years the historical centre around the Pelourinho was a no-go area and the area around Barra also went into a steep decline. However many of the historical buildings in the centre have now been refurbished, policing is much better and recently the Barra area around the pousada seems to have gained a completely new lease of life, with a pedestrian only promenade and lots of new bars opening. One thing is for sure – the vibe in Salvador is something else completely, and the tropical spirit in the air totally contagious.

Not to be Missed
– Visit to the Pelourinho with English speaking guide Fernando: R$125
– Side trip to Praia do Forte and Imbassai beaches: R$250 for 2
– Chill on Barra beach 5 minutes walk away or Porto da Barra beach 10 mins away
– Visit to Igreja/church of Bomfim and the the port of Ribeira
– All day tour with tour bus which goes from the farol/lighthouse nearby

Pousada Starpoints
* Personal hospitality from Neil
* Excellent location and nice chill out space
* Newly refurbished with top quality materials

Brazil: Hidden Pousadas – Pousada Vila do Mar, Buzios, Rio de Janeiro

By Alison McGowan
March 11, 2014

Pousada Vila do Mar is one of the most traditional pousadas in all of Buzios and it occupies a prime position only moments away from Rua das Pedras – the street with all the restaurants, boutiques and bars – and the Orla Bardot promenade.

Owned by Argentina Mario Jose who arrived here in the late 70s and somehow never left, this is a tropical gem with 18 rooms of which 7 have either full or partial sea views. There’s a small pool to lounge around and an adjoining breakfast room which functions as a fondue restaurant in the evening.

I liked the place already when I visited a couple of years ago but staying here is something different. I got one of the sea view rooms with a huge high ceiling and separate sitting room, full of character to go with the comfort. And at night I got an invitation to go the Gran Cine Bardot next door the small 111 seat cult cinema which is run by the pousada and serves as the central venue for the November film festival. A hidden gem definitely worth visiting to go with the not quite so hidden pousada next door- the beautiful Pousada Vila do Mar.

About the Location
Armaão de Bzios, or Bzios as it is more commonly known, is a very special place – a hilly wooded peninsula just 3 hours drive from Rio with no fewer than 24 bays and beaches.

This is not exactly a hiddden place for Brazilians and Argentinians at least. Everyone has heard of the place and Carioca high society was already coming here way before French actress Brigitte Bardot made the place famous in the 1960s.

When I first came in the early 80s the last bit of the road from Rio between Cabo Frio and Bzios was horrendously potholed and access was difficult but Rua das Pedras- the cobbled main street was aready full of bars shops and restaurants. These days of course the place has grown tremendously and the cruise ships have started docking here in the summer. But come off season and the sleepy laid back feel there was back in the 80s returns.

This time I tried out pousadas in the centre and in other parts of the peninsula- Praia do Geriba and Praia do Manguinhos. And the verdict? Each one more beautiful than the last with incredible sea views at all. Where you go just depends on how much action you want at night and how private you want your beach. It turns out parts of Buzios still are hidden after all.

Not to be Missed
– Checking out the bars, boutiques and restaurants on the Rua das Pedras
– A stroll along the Orla Bardot promenade at dawn when only fishermen are up
– Trip over to one of the neighbouring beaches by water taxi: Praia do Armaão, Praia dos Ossos, – Praia de João Fernandes and João Fernandinho

Starpoints
* Central location only a minute from the Rua das Pedras and Orla Bardot
* Lovely small pool in leafy gardens
* Cult cinema next door: the Gran Cine Bardot

Brazil: Hidden Pousadas – Kite Brazil Hotel, Praia do Prea, Ceara

By Alison McGowan
February 18, 2014

Kite Brazil was definitely a surprise. A very pleasant surprise but a surprise nonetheless. First of all TripAdvisor has it down as the no 1 hotel in Jericoacoara, a completely different town 12 kms away, and secondly it is classified as a hotel when this is very much a pousada with individual bungalows, communal breakfasts and laid back friendly vibe. What Austrian/Italian hosts Hacky and Dani have done here is to create a kitesurfers’ paradise and at the same time a place where anyone who appreciates nature and tranquility can chill out in total peace.

There are 6 spacious wooden bungalows at Kite Brazil, all beautifully appointed with excellent shower rooms all designed to make the most of local materials and artesanato. Colourful throws on the beds and shelves made out of old kite boards mix with polished concrete floors and inlaid old Portuguese tiling to give a totally unique eclectic feel to the living space which is completed with wrap around veranda, recliner and (of course) a hammock for those long siestas.

There’s no air-conditioning here, no TV and your phone won’t work, but you’ve got a great pool with loads of sun loungers, the beach on your doorstep and high speed wi-fi internet if you really can’t do without your fix. I rather wish they hadn’t had the latter so I could have had an excuse to chill out just listening to the sound of the waves. But either way this place is totally special – a real hidden paradise!

About the Location
Praia do Pre is 294kms from Fortaleza in one direction and around 12kms (or a 20 minute buggy ride) from Jericoacoara in the other and light years away from both in terms of landscape and feel. A few houses, a couple of small shops, a few pousadas, a few beach bars and a kite school are all that exist here apart from a beach which just seems to go on forever. Transport here is normally by buggy, quadbike or 4×4 truck and nearly all the “roads” are pure sand, including the “main road” to Jericoacoara seen in the picture here. A great place to chill out and do nothing, and an even better place if you are into kite surfing.

Not to be Missed
– Kitesurfing lessons with Hacky on Pre beach
– Side trip to Jericoacoara for restaurants and nightlife
– Chilling on the beach with a plate of shrimps and a cool beer
– A trip to the lagoons, Pedra Furada and the lazy tree (Arvore da Preguia)

Starpoints
* Wonderful hosts – Hacky and Dani
* Spacious well designed bungalows
*Choice of pool or beach for chilling
* High speed wi-fi internet

Brazil: Hidden Pousadas – Sossego do Cantinho, Lencois Maranhenses (Barreirinhas), Maranhao

By Alison McGowan
January 26, 2014

This morning I woke up in yet another gorgeous hidden paradise – the wonderful Pousada Sossego do Cantinho. Set on the banks of the River Preguias on the opposite side to Barreirinhas, gateway to the Lenois Maranhenses, this place has all the advantages of peace and tranquility off the beaten track whilst only being half an hour from bars restaurants shops and tourist agencies for those who need to be in civilisation now and again!

There are only 4 bungalows here, all super-spacious and light with rustic tiled floors, large beds and big bathrooms. Locally hand crafted buriti artesenato gives an authentic feel to the design, and the comfort is completed by split air-conditioning and fans plus mosquito nets, mini fridge and cable TV for those who can’t do without news from home!

There’s no pool here but you’re right on the river so a quick dip is easy and there are sun loungers around near the small beach and a hammock on your terrace for relaxing. Walk across the gardens and there is a small restaurant serving light lunches and dinners in addition to breakfast, where the wi-fi actually works!

Sossego do Cantinho came highly recommended by 2 lots of friends so I had high expectations already but the reality was even better. This is a place where the only noise is the rustle of the leaves and the birds singing, where you really can relax in peace. A truly hidden gem.

About the Location
Barreirinhas is a fairly non-descript and sprawling town on the banks of the River Preguias. It is nevertheless a good place to start your trip to Lenois Maranhenses not least because the 7am van from your pousada in São Luis will get you to your new pousada for midday, just in time for lunch before the “sunset trip” to the dunes which leaves at 2pm. Tell Michael at Sossego do Cantinho which van you are taking and get the van to drop you off at the Restaurante Terral where he will be waiting to take you the 5 minutes across the river. Time to grab a bite to eat, change into swimming gear, not forgetting hat, sunscreen and insect repellent, before heading off for the dunes. They’ll pick you up at the pousada.

Want to go into Barreirinhas in the evening? No problem. Just walk along the sandy track outside the pousada for 10 minutes and there’s a foot ferry running constantly over the river 24 hours a day. It costs nothing and you’ll be right in the town centre in 15 minutes total.

Not to be missed
– Trips to Lenois Maranhenses, the dunes and lagoons Azul and Bonita
– Trip down the River Preguias to Cabur and Atins
– Village of Madacuru and the lighthouse Farol das Preguias
– Trip down the Cardosa river returning in a rubber tube
– Local craft work made from Buriti palms
– Kayaking from the pousada

Starpoints
* Location on the banks of the Rio Preguias
* Swiss-Brazilian hosts Michael and Josiane
* Lovely chalets
* Great food

Brazil: Hidden Pousadas – Fazendinha Buzios, Buzios, Rio de Janeiro

By Alison McGowan
January 8, 2014

Pousada Fazendinha Buzios was a wonderful find and at the same time a complete surprise – a new guesthouse where you feel as if you are in the middle of the country whilst only being a few miles from the bustle of Rua das Pedras and the innumerable beaches of Buzios. There are 6 beautiful spacious chalets to choose from here set in 30,000 sq metres of parkland, complete with fruit trees, stables and small equestrian centre. All the chalets have different colour schemes with verandas leading out to the gardens and all are equipped with excellent king sized beds, ceiling fans, air conditioning, fridge TV and telephone, En-suite shower rooms come complete with special fazendinha” amenities, fluffy white towels and bathrobes.

Bring/rent a car if you want to explore; if you don’t feel like going out though you’ll find plenty to occupy you actually in the pousada. There’s a good sized pool, massage room, large lounge with board games and cable TV plus a restaurant serving light meals and snacks to accompany the extensive wine list. Regrettably I wasn’t around long enough to take proper advantage of everything on offer, but it’s always best to leave wishing you didn’t have to. I’ll definitely be back!

Armacao de Bzios, or Bzios as it is more commonly known is not exactly a hidden place. A beautiful hilly peninsula with 23 beaches located only a few hours drive from Rio this is somewhere everyone has heard of and Carioca high society was already coming here way before French actress Brigitte Bardot made the place famous in the 1960s.

The Pousada Fazendinha Buzios is actually 10kms from the action of the main drag of Rua das Pedras and 6 kms from the famous beach of Gerib, and if this is what you are looking for there are lots of pousadas nearer by to recommend. Where this pousada wins is in offering the comfort and space of your own chalet in the tranquility of the countryside whilst still being near to all the famous beaches. Bring or rent a car and it’s a perfect combination!

Not to be Missed
– Night out in Rua das Pedras
– A tour around the 23 Buzios beaches
– Side trip to Arraial do Cabo including Ilha do Farol
– Golfing at the Buzios Golf Club
– Lounging around the pousada pool

Starpoints
* Peace and tranquility of the location
* Proximity to beaches with as much or little action as you want
* Wonderful chalet accommodation

Brazil: Hidden Pousadas – Casa Zulu, Icaraizinho de Amontada, Ceara

By Alison McGowan
December 3, 2013

Casa Zulu was a wonderful surprise. It already came highly recommended by kiting friends, but for some reason I just wasn&#145t expecting to find a beautiful beachfront pousada right near the centre of the small village of Icaraizinho de Amontada (which is so hidden it doesn&#145t even appear on the map). South African /French run, Pousada Casa Zulu has 6 suites in total comprising two floor octagonal chalets and garden rooms, and all are set amongst the leafy tropical gardens. They&#145re very comfortable too; all have airconditioning, flatscreen TV, large box spring beds and excellent power showers in the bathrooms. But what I loved best was having the beach on my doorstep, a lovely swimming pool to lounge around, and the beautiful double height thatched club room.

Pousada Casa Zulu has plenty of competition these days from other pousadas in Icaraizinho. Where it wins hands down from others is in its central location right in the village, in its friendly international atmosphere and in its superb value for money which makes it perfect for solos, kite surfers and families alike. I only got to stay one night at Casa Zulu, which was definitely not enough. I&#145ll be back for sure next year!

Starpoints
* Location near village but also right on the beach
* Personal attention from hosts Roxanne and Edouard
* Beautiful bungalows in leafy gardens

Brazil: Hidden Pousadas – Dreamland Bungalows, Marau Peninsula, Bahia

By Alison McGowan
October 22, 2013

From the moment you walk into Dreamland Bungalows you feel the magic in all your senses. It’s not just the amazing sea views and the sound of the waves, but it’s the whole style of the place coupled with the warmth of Norwegian/Brazilian hosts, Jan and Lyana.

There are 10 suites, curiously in 2 story villas rather than in bungalows as the name might suggest, and all have varandas, hammocks and writing tables where you can chill out or write looking out to sea or over the palm groves. Attention to detail is everywhere: from the wood and eucalypto craftwork, which create a rustic Brazilian charm to the beautiful bed linen, which ensure you have those sweet dreams. And if you find you&#145ve forgotten your insect repellent or suntan lotion that’s not a problem. You&#145ll find replacements at the small shop in reception.

In the rest of the pousada there is a restaurant which serves food until 8pm after which the local pizza place (which apparently is very good) runs a delivery service. However, the pice de resistance is the beach bar, also open to passing beach lovers, offering wonderfully iced beer, as well as caipirinhas and snacks all to the sound of reggae and Latin music.

The day we arrived the local village transformer blew up and the power was off for 24 hours. So no wi-fi internet to add to the lack of any mobile phone coverage. Dreamland fortunately has its own generator, so once that came on we were back to normal. But actually, you know, you can do without it! Sitting in that bar watching the waves roll in, and the moon rise in good company for me is paradise.

Not to be Missed
– Pousada Starpoints
– Beachfront location
– Rustic charm and comfort
– Hospitality of Jan, Lyana and staff

Brazil: Hidden Pousadas – Pousada Dona Zilha, São Paulo

By Alison McGowan
October 1, 2013

Pousada Dona Zilah is a large 1930s townhouse, extended and converted to accommodate a maximum of 34 people in 15 suites. Rooms are basic, with tiled floors and painted brick walls, and some only have windows looking onto the internal courtyard which can make things a bit claustrophobic, but they all have the essential comforts like a reasonable bed, shower, and TV, and you are not likely to spend much time in your room anyway. In any case any simplicity is more than made up for by the fact that this is a unique, charming and very reasonably priced place to stay, a pousada right in Jardins, one of the most chic areas of São Paulo.

Only a few blocks from Avenida Paulista, Pousada Dona Zilah stands out as a wonderful anomaly – a lovely refurbished house with character and style totally surrounded by big high rise buildings, bars and restaurants. A great place to start or finish your trip if you fly into São Paulo, or as a base for discovering the city itself.

Starpoints
* location right in the centre of the city, but only half an hour from the bus station and 45 minutes from Congonhas airport
* lovely restaurant, bar and place to work
* wi-fi throughout
* library where you can swap paperbacks

Brazil: Hidden Pousadas – Pousada Natur Campeche, Florianópolis, Santa Catarina

By Alison McGowan
September 9, 2013

Florianópolis is not exactly a hidden” destination in Brazil. Every year and particularly in high season, between December and March, the place fills with both local Brazilians and thousands of Argentinians. Fortunately most of these head for Jurer and Praia dos Ingleses and the highrise hotels and resorts on the island, leaving the lovely deserted Campeche beach for the surfers and travellers fortunate enough to have found the Pousada Natur Campeche.

This is a largish pousada as pousadas go and the emphasis is very much on sustainable tourism within eco-friendly principles. The 21 suites are all dotted around the leafy gardens so you never get the feeling that there are lots of people around. In the suites themselves there are mosquito netted beds with excellent bed linen, large bathrooms with solar powered showers, minibar and net TV. In the best ones there is also a Jacuzzi and all the themed suites have either a small garden or a veranda overlooking gardens, pool or sauna. A beautiful reading room featuring art from the “Paint a future” project and a sunny breakfast room complement the common spaces and there is wi-fi everywhere for those who can’t live without their emails.

I arrived during an electric storm and torrential rain. No problem. The super efficient staff got me settled in immediately and once in my room I was back in 7th heaven!

Starpoints
* Location of the pousada
* Friendly service
* Pool, sauna and reading room for guests
* Emphasis on sustainable tourism and eco-friendly practices

Brazil: Hidden Pousadas – Pousada Fim da Trilha, Ilha do Mel (Encantadas), Parana

By Alison McGowan
August 20, 2013

It definitely helps when the sun is shining and the sky is blue but I was definitely encantada” or delighted several times over to find such a lovely pousada in a lesser known part of Ilha do Mel.

Fim da Trilha is family run and they pride themselves on their service and their restaurant both of which were wonderful. I arrived at lunchtime whilst my suite was still being prepared and miraculously a long cool beer appeared at the bar whilst I was waiting; at night it was a “casquinha de siri” and a fish stew or “moqueca” which came as recommendations. Fabulous.

The pousada itself has 7 suites and one chal, all pretty basic but clean and comfortable with air-conditioning, flat screen TVs and minibar. But you won’t be spending much time in your room. If you don’t want to chill out in the lounging room, bar or restaurant you are right in the middle of the village of Encantadas, and minutes from some of the most gorgeous beaches in Brazil.

I only had one night in Fim da Trilha unfortunately but it gave me time not only to explore the local area but also to talk to other guests, all of whom were delighted with their experience. I myself will definitely be back!

Starpoints
* Margareth, Guilherme, Rafa and staff
* Paella and moqueca in pousada restaurant
* Location: 5 minutes from the jetty and 5 minutes from the famous cave
