Brazil: São Paulo Entertainment Guide
|
This weeks entertainment guide for São Paulo features a Greek restaurant in Bom Retiro, a modern art exhibition in Ibirapuera Park, this weeks recommended film release, and a roundup of some other upcoming events.

This weeks restaurant recommendation is Acrópoles in Bom Retiro. As you can probably guess from the name Greek cuisine is Acrópoles speciality, and something its been perfecting for almost 50 years in São Paulo. The restaurant front is rather basic and simple, but then the food is arguably the most important aspect, and Acrópoles also has the advantage of being one of the few Greek restaurants in the city. In true Greek style the owner, Mr. Petrakis, receives the clients personally. In unusual style the restaurant doesnt have a standard menu, and the customers must go to the kitchen window to choose what they would like to eat. This can range from shrimp, octopus in wine, stuffed squid, roast lamb, and of course Moussaka. All are flavoured with traditional and rich Greek seasonings, including herbs and oil. Desserts are similarly selected, albeit from the window containing the starters, and contain typical Greek delights such as Kataifi, shredded Phyllo pastry. Expect to pay around R$30 for a meal, excluding drinks. Open Monday - Sunday: 11:30am - 11:00pm. Rua da Graça, 364. Bom Retiro. Tel. 3223 4386.
The Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM, the Musuem of Modern Art) is using Ibirapueras Oca as a site for its MAM na Oca exhibition. Opening last week, the exhibition brings around 700 works from the 4500 at MAM, which will be exhibited in the Oscar Niemeyer designed building. The aim of the exhibition is not to treat it as a standard chronological examination of the art on show, but more as a reflection on the history of the museum. The exhibition itself is divided into four areas, each for the four floors of the Oca. These cover a wide range of themes, such as the subconscious, the relation between art and the city, the sense of modern art, and the work of little known Brazilian artists. The exhibition ends on December 10th. Free entry. Open Tuesday - Sunday: 10am - 6pm. Door 3. Ibirapuera park. Av. Pedro Alvares Cabral. Tel. 5549 9688. http://www.mam.org.br/exposicoes/cartaz/index.php?sala=4
This weeks recommended film release, opening on Thursday, is The Grudge 2 (O Grito 2 in Portuguese). The Grudge 2 carries on directly from the earlier film, which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as Karen Davis. In the earlier film Karen was in Japan as an exchange student studying social work, and she agrees to cover for a missing nurse who is caring for an elderly catatonic woman. Karen suspects something is awry though when the house shes staying in seems to be killing people around her, including the elderly woman. It becomes apparent that the house has a terrible curse which she must try and stop. The second film continues briefly with Karen, but then switches to her sister Amber Tamblyn (Aubrey Davis). The same curse that afflicts Karen also affects her sister, and brings together a group of unrelated characters in another attempt to try and stop it. Both films are based on the famous Japanese horror series Ju-On, and recommended for fans of the horror genre. Rated PG-13 in the USA. IMDBs page on The Grudge 2. Guia da Semanas page on The Grudge 2, with showing cinemas and times.
