Brazil: São Paulo Entertainment Guide
|
This weeks entertainment guide for São Paulo features a bar/restaurant in Itaim, an exhibition by a Brazilian artist, this weeks recommended film release, and a roundup of some other upcoming events.

The restaurant recommendation this week is Bar do Juarez located in Itaim Bibi. The bar/restaurants name comes from the owner, Juarez Alves, who has previously worked as a bartender and waiter, so should have some idea of good service. The decoration is inspired from those bars that once stood in the historic centre of São Paulo, and scenes from old São Paulo adorn the walls. Being a bar/restaurant the menu is not vast, although Bar do Juarez is famous for its "picanha argentina fatiada" (sliced Argentinean steak) with cabbage, vinaigrette, farofa, garlic and bread. A small grill is brought to your table to allow you cook to taste. Other dishes include ribs, again served with cabbage, farofa, toasted garlic, vinaigrette, and Italian bread. A selection of canapés is also available. Note that Bar do Juarez also has a branch in Moema. Open Monday - Friday, 5pm - 1am, Saturday, Sunday and Holidays, 12pm - 1am. Av. Juscelino Kubitschek, 1164. Itaim Bibi. Tel: (11) 3078-3458. http://www.bardojuarez.com.br
The São Paulo Museum of Modern Art (Museu de Arte Moderna, MAM) is currently showing an exhibition dedicated to Alfredo Volpi, titled Volpi: The Music of Colour (Volpi: A Música da Cor). Volpi was born in Italy in 1896, but moved to São Paulo at the age of two, where he lived for most of his life. Volpi was a self-taught painter, producing paintings from an early age, and later becoming part of the Brazilian modernist movement. He gained national renown with his participation at the second São Paulo Art Bienal, wining the best Brazilian painter award. The exhibition is showing 140 paintings, 20 never seen before, selected by the curator Olívio Tavares de Araújo. The exhibition opened on the 5th April, and will end on the 2nd July. Open Monday - Sunday, 10am - 6pm. http://www.mam.org.br
The film recommendation this week is Prime (Terapia do Amor in Portuguese). The film is a romantic comedy, set in New York (as romantic comedies often are), and starring Uma Thurman as Rafi, a recently divorced 37-year-old. Rafi falls in love with Dave (Bryan Greenberg) a talented painter, who is much younger than her. The film follows the relationship and the love from various viewpoints, including friends, relatives and even Rafis therapist, played by Meryl Streep. The film has received reasonable reviews, and is of course recommended for romantic comedy fans. IMDBs page on Mission: Impossible 3. Guia da Semanas page on Prime, with cinemas and showing times.
